Expressivism, Relativism, and the Analytic Equivalence Test

چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to show that, pace (Field, 2009), MacFarlane's assessment relativism and expressivism should be sharply distinguished. We do so by arguing that relativism and expressivism exemplify two very different approaches to context-dependence. Relativism, on the one hand, shares with other contemporary approaches a bottom-up, building block, model, while expressivism is part of a different tradition, one that might include Lewis' epistemic contextualism and Frege's content individuation, with which it shares an organic model to deal with context-dependence. The building-block model and the organic model, and thus relativism and expressivism, are set apart with the aid of a particular test: only the building-block model is compatible with the idea that there might be analytically equivalent, and yet different, propositions.

Dialogue structure and logical expressivism
This paper aims to develop the implications of logical expressivism for a theory of dialogue coherence. I proceed in three steps. Firstly, certain structural properties of cooperative dialogue are identified. Secondly, I describe a variant of the multi-agent natural deduction calculus that I introduced in Piwek (2007) and demonstrate how it accounts for the aforementioned structures. Thirdly, I...
متن کاملWhy the Negation Problem Is Not a Problem for Expressivism
In 1999, Unwin introduced a puzzle about expressivism and negation. He showed that existing accounts of expressivism cannot accommodate even the simplest case of negated normative judgments involving the permissible, the required, and the forbidden. Since descriptivist accounts of normative language do not have a problem accommodating these cases, Unwin believed that the problem was a problem s...
متن کاملExpressivism about Knowledge and the Value of Knowledge
The aim of the paper is to state a version of epistemic expressivism regarding knowledge, and to suggest how this expressivism about knowledge explains the value of knowledge. The paper considers how an account of the value of knowledge based on expressivism about knowledge responds to the Meno Problem, the Swamping Problem, and a variety of other questions that pertains to the value of knowled...
متن کاملConceptualizing Sensory Relativism in Light of Emotioncy: A Movement beyond Linguistic Relativism
Given the significance of relativism in molding our worldview and uncovering the nature of truth, this study using the newly-developed concept of emotioncy, attempted to introduce sensory relativism as a new perspective based on which senses can relativize our understanding of the world. To espouse the theory, 24 individuals were interviewed on their experiences...
متن کاملParadox and Relativism
Since the time of Plato, relativism has been attacked as a self-refuting theory. Today, there are two basic kinds of argument that are used to show that global relativism is logically incoherent: first, a direct descendent of the argument Plato uses against Protagoras, called the peritrope; and, second, a more recent argument that relativism leads to an infinite regress. Although some relativis...
